Sant Gervasi, Bitches! – Correbarri 10K Race

The concept behind Correbarri race is simple but genius.  When you register for the race you select which of the many neighborhoods ofnu Barcelona you want to represent. Then, when you pick up your bib you get the usual for Barcelona complementary race shirt.  However,  each neighborhood had it’s own design and color.  It’s a small celebration of the barrios. I had a feelling the race would be fun.

I usually have to take the metro to get to these early Sunday morning races. The cars of the train are a great mix of fellow runners, pensioners and people returning home from Saturday night’s parties. Today there were two guys who could barely walk but still felt there was a chance to salvage something from lost evening. Picture women in sports gear with two slobbering guys throwing pick up lines and trying to hug them. . They made the ride go three times faster.

Now about the race.   It was one of the few times I wore the race shirt to the race. It felt appropriate this time. Many people felt this way. Each neighborhood showing off its colors. My daughter was delighted that Sant Gervasi had hot pink. Friends chatted at the starting line. This was a casual race. I even met a group of exchange student which each one had registered as a different part of the city and each had a different shirt on.

It felt good to run there and since I really wasn’t ready for this race as faras breakingany personalrecords, I took it slow and was thinking about my time so far in Barcelona. I thought and thought and by the time I crossed the finish line,  I yelled…
Sant Gervasi, bitches!
